IBM

Originally founded in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, it changed its name to International Business Machines in 1924. At over 105 years old, the company has reinvented itself many times over. It’s president, Thomas J. Watson, grew IBM from 1,300 employees to 72,500 in 1956, when he died. Today IBM employs about 135,000.

It famously created the IBM PC, and the IBM PC-Compatible marketplace over 30 years ago.

It has been on a buying spree recently, with Softlayer in 2013 and the Weather Company in 2016.

The latest version of its mainframe, the z/14 encrypts all data.
