My challenges with upgrading VMware to 6.5u1

So in theory, a new VMware release is normally a doddle to upgrade to using the methods covered in Keeping VMware ESXi Updated: 6.5 Update 1. It’s worked for the last few releases, and even the same underlying process worked to Upgrade VMware ESXi from 5.5U3 to 6.5 online.

But when I tried to upgrade to 6.5 Update 1, I got a [ToolError] message, and nothing would make it go away. So I put the upgrade off for a while and hoped that the Wisdom of the Internet™ would prevail.

And indeed it has. Trying a few days later, I discovered a Reddit entitled Error trying to update an ESXi 6.5 Host to the brand new release. The article didn’t have the exact error I had but did deal with something that I’d spotted in the /var/log/esxupdate.log file. The challenge appeared as the VMware Tools locker.

So I follow the instructions and get a successful install and a request to reboot. It looks good, and I’m on VMware 6.5U1 now. A synopsis of those instructions follows:

And that works…
