ZDNet is reporting that BT has unveiled their Dynamic Network Services. This has three prongs, one using SDN to manage bandwidth into the core, one supporting Network Function Virtualisation and the third uses SD-WAN. The BT roadmap shows a capability to cover most of the expected options.
The bandwidth on demand service uses their core SDN ability. This allows for flexing the bandwidth automatically using their customer portal. In the future, this will extend to support usage-based billing.
The second element covers BT’s Cloud Service Nodes, and shortly the ability to use Cisco UCSe blades in routers or the new Cisco ENCS appliance to support virtual network functions on the platform. The roadmap slide in the ZDNet article appears also to show a generic x86 platform in 2018. VNFs supported on this platform include routers and firewalls, wireless controllers, BT’s Connect Intelligence capabilities from both Riverbed and InfoVista, a customer’s own VNF, or Agile Connect.
Agile Connect is the Nokia’s Nuage powered SD-WAN facility. Cisco’s IWAN will also be available as an option. These are not yet fully available, so check with your friendly local BT account team.
