| AT&T is a global telecommunications company headquartered in Dallas, Texas, USA.
Originally AT&T was the monolithic organisation that ran the telephone system in the US. In 1982 a court decision led to the break-up of the conglomerate in 1984. This created the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs or baby-Bell’s). One of the these was Southwestern Bell Corporation, which ran the phone systems in Texas and some surrounding states. Later on in November 2005, SBC bought the rump of the AT&T company, which had run the long-distance services between the RBOCs. It changed it’s name to AT&T and recovered the T stockmarket symbol. As with many organisations now, it’s not just about shipping the content, but creating and owning it. AT&T now own DirectTV and in October 2016 announced an intent to acquire Time Warner. |
